Research interests

Professor Garry Walter is Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is based in the Northern Clinical School. A child and adolescent psychiatrist, Garry is Area Clinical Director of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Northern Sydney Central Coast Health. He is Editor of Australasian Psychiatry, a journal published by Taylor and Francis on behalf of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). He also serves on several other editorial boards.

Garry has published over 250 articles and book chapters and has won a number of key research awards, including the 1998 Pfizer Award for Best Paper at RANZCP Congress, the 1999 Organon Junior Research Award and prizes for Best Poster at several RANZCP Congresses. Garry's major research interests are in mood disorders in young people, physical treatments in psychiatry, genocide and severe trauma, psychiatric stigma, use and abuse of media, publishing processes and ethics. His PhD was on the use of electroconvulsive therapy in the young.

In 2009, Garry was awarded a prestigious “College Citation” by the RANZCP for “exceptional contributions to clinical work, research, scholarship and College educational activities, particularly as Editor of Australasian Psychiatry”.
